JJCO imported Lithgow barreled actions, brand new or rebuilt (FTR) that were never completed into a rifle by the Aussies and JJCO stuffed wood on these and often these look brand new. JJCO imported rebuilt Lithgows which are matching numbers and correct but may have used parts put on them. sometimes the wood is any date on those as is parts. JJCO imported incomplete Lithgow barreled actions cobbled together to be rifles. JJCC imported real Lithgows with mismatched bolts to receivers JJCO imported real original Lithgows.all orig and matching correct. Now to the JJCO import markings and the confusion due to internet inaccurate postings. To be Clear: An all original rifle will have serial number on back of bolt handle same as serial number on receiver, same as serial number on barrel, same as serial number on bayonet stud and same as serial number on underside of rear sight leaf. This assembly is when serial numbers are put on bolt ,receiver, barrel, bayonet stud, underside of rear sight leaf. Then such completed actions were pulled from stores and barreled & completed as No1MkIII* rifles. bolt and receiver were 'mated' and so numbered as a set. The practice of building replacement rifles seems to have been quite common at Lithgow.For the record.the number on underside of bolt and on rear of receiver are the batching numbers. For example I've seen a 1945 Lithgow receiver with an A prefix serial number. Other examples of replacement receivers I've seen didn't have a unit or rack number applied. Perhaps they just copied both numbers off the old receiver. I thought that practice had stopped by then but I could be wrong. The only reason I say, could, is I'm not sure why they would still be applying them by 1942 or later. It was common for early Australian SMLE's to have the unit or rack number stamped on the receiver above the serial number. In your case the bottom number will be your rifles serial number and the top number could be a unit or rack number. The serial number is applied to the bolt and action only and all other components are unnumbered. My rifle is like most rifles refurbished at Lithgow in the late 40's. It's marked as being refurbished in November 1945 (R MA 11/45) but it was built on a new 1945 receiver with a pre 1918 serial number applied. There's plenty of examples out other of Lithgow rebuilding rifles on new actions and applying the original rifle serial number.
